My neighbors and I have decided that the tremendous amount of deadwood that is piling up around the edge of our pond and various other places on our property presents a firesafety and safety issue. Plus we have just lost about 6 more trees with the recent storm from what appears to have been a microburst or windshear event. Shocked

Karen and Alex and I would like to make use of a large capacity chipper (some of the trees are fairly large in diameter) and if anyone has 1) one we would be able to borrow or 2) any recommendations of where to rent one locally we would be very grateful! Very Happy

Karen and Alex are new to the community and bought Paul and Nina Sprull's house in March at 1200 Bryan Point Rd and I bought Deena's house at 1206 Bryan Point Rd in 1999.

Thank you for any recommendations!

I have a medium-ish one...... 6hp Troybilt type

it works best on green stuff (dry is harder) and about up to 2" diameter.

frankly, it's a pretty slow process..... hard to do a lot of volume.

you're welcome to come on over and check it out, take it for a whirl!

send me a message in here!

No experience w/chippers or good suggestions along those lines to offer.

But frankly, a chainsaw has got to be a much funner tool to use, and probably
ought to be way high up on your list of extremely useful tool to buy. Especially
if you can burn wood, take out of the pile anything above 1.5" to 2" dia and
cut into appropriate lengths. Getting heavy wood down onto the ground is
the big safety issue, and a chainsaw does that well. Actually, even if you
just left it on the ground w/o either stacking for burning or chipping it, it'd
be safer and firesafer.

The smaller diameter and brushy stuff can be piled/composted at the
treelines, providing a bit of habitat for small animals. I guess that doesn't
do much to help the fire safety issue, except that if it's piled instead of
evenly distributed it'd probably be a bit better.

(Some of us would even travel w/chainsaw to play, assuming there is
chocolate involved...)

Oxon Hill Rentals up Indianhead highway in Ft Washington is one place to
rent stuff, and I like the rental place in LaPlata.

If wood chips are desired (and I find them very desireable!), we've found
out that every year or two the SMECO power line tree trimmers are
around, doing their thing. If you pull up to them and offer them a place to
dump a load of their wood chips, they'll take you up on it. If memory
serves, I believe late autumn when the leaves have mostly fallen off is
when these free chips are "in season".

Hey, would love to make y'all's acquaintance. Maybe down at the pool,
which is our local equivalent of the Roman forum or baths, especially on
certain Sunday evenings when potlucks tend to erupt, sometimes
spontaneously and sometimes by announcement (watch Kent Hibbens'
public service emails). _____________________________Marty Carts
