Six Accokeek-based non-profit organizations -- The Accokeek Foundation, the Accokeek Historical Society, the Alice Ferguson Foundation, The Friends of the Accokeek Library, The Moyaone Association, and The Greater Accokeek Civic Association, have joined to sponsor a local history project with the help of substantial support from a Maryland Humanities Council grant.

More than forty local residents representative of oldtimers and newcomers from both the white and black community have been interviewed and their personal stories recorded on audiodisc and digital videotape.

There are stories of watermen and steamboats, tobacco farming, sharecropping, integration of the local churches and schools, the fight for and against the establishment of Piscataway Park, and the at-that-time groundbreaking cooperative sharing of scenic easements by private landowners with the Federal government. We will present key selections from these stories through photographs, artifacts, documents and a professionally produced audiovisual program running on a computer-driven multimedia kiosk. » more
